What is the optimal pH range for using Aluminum III Sulfate?
Aluminum Sulfate performs best in a pH window between 5.5 and 7.5. In this range, it hydrolyzes to form insoluble aluminum hydroxide precipitates that can wrap around colloidal particles. If the pH drops too low, the aluminum remains dissolved as toxic aquo-ions. If the pH rises too high, soluble aluminate ions form, which reduces flocculation efficiency.
What is the difference between iron-free and standard grade alum?
Standard industrial alum contains small trace amounts of iron (Fe2O3 under 0.5%), which is suitable for municipal wastewater treatment. Iron-free alum contains less than 0.005% iron and is used in paper production and drinking water systems to prevent staining and chemical side reactions.
How should dry Aluminum Sulfate be dissolved and stored?
Solid alum should be dissolved in water to make a 10% to 15% solution. Storage tanks, piping, and valves must be built from acid-resistant materials like fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP), 316 stainless steel, or high-density polyethylene (HDPE) to prevent corrosion.
Can Aluminum Sulfate be used for phosphorus removal?
Yes, it is widely used for chemical phosphorus removal in municipal wastewater plants. Aluminum ions react directly with dissolved orthophosphates to form insoluble aluminum phosphate (AlPO4) precipitates. This precipitate is then removed along with the primary sludge.
