Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes are the gold standard for desalination, reuse, and purification. However, their operation is constantly threatened by scaling. Scaling occurs when dissolved salts in the feedwater concentrate beyond their thermodynamic solubility limit within the boundary layer near the membrane surface (concentration polarization). The most persistent scalants include Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3), Calcium Sulfate (CaSO4), Barium Sulfate (BaSO4), Strontium Sulfate (SrSO4), and reactive colloidal Silica (SiO2).
