What is the optimal pH and temperature profile for alkaline membrane cleaning?
For typical polyamide thin-film composite (TFC) membranes, the standard recommended pH range during a Clean-in-Place (CIP) cycle is 11.0 to 12.0. However, special high-pH tolerant membranes can withstand up to pH 12.5. To maximize chemical kinetics, cleaning temperatures should be maintained between 30°C and 40°C. Cleaning below 25°C reduces organic dissolution rates, while exceeding 45°C can cause irreversible thermal compaction of the membrane polymer matrix.
Why are formulated alkaline cleaners superior to simple commodity sodium hydroxide (caustic soda)?
