Technical SpecsNavigating High Hardness, Salinity, and Rapid Biofouling in Sub-Saharan African Thermal Exchange Systems.
Nigeria’s industrial landscape—ranging from the massive petrochemical refineries in Port Harcourt and Warri, to the heavy manufacturing complexes in Lagos, Ogun State, and Kano—operates under complex hydrogeological and environmental pressures. Circulating cooling water loops and RO desalination membranes face extreme stress due to seasonal water table fluctuations, high source-water hardness, and elevated ambient temperatures that accelerate biological proliferation and scale formation.
As a leading supplier, Smedic Technology bridges this gap by manufacturing advanced circulating water chemicals that prevent mineral scaling, metal corrosion, and organic foaming. Our formulations are engineered to maintain high heat transfer coefficients in cooling towers, prevent premature membrane replacement in high-salinity RO plants, and ensure municipal effluents comply with NESREA (National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency) regulations.
Continuous thermal evaporation in West African cooling towers causes rapid calcium, magnesium, and silica concentrations. Smedic’s organophosphorus and copolymer antiscalants stabilize these hardness salts even under elevated cycles of concentration (CoC).
High ambient heat creates the perfect breeding ground for algae, fungi, and sulfate-reducing bacteria. We provide advanced biocidal formulations that penetrate thick extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) layers, maintaining micro-clean heat exchanger walls.
With water conservation targets rising across Nigeria, plants are reusing municipal wastewater. Our flocculants (APAM/CPAM), coagulants (PAC/PFS), and specialized fluoride removal agents ensure industrial discharge matches target environmental guidelines.

How our advanced formulations address complex scale, foam, and heavy metal challenges in industrial environments.
Industrial circulating water loops are dynamic, highly reactive systems. As cooling water evaporates, dissolved ions concentration rises, exceeding standard solubility indexes. In Nigerian industrial hubs, source groundwater is frequently rich in bicarbonates, silica, and iron. When this water is heated within a heat exchanger or steam generation tube, the local heat changes trigger thermal precipitation:
Ca²⁺ + 2HCO₃⁻ → CaCO₃(s)↓ + CO₂↑ + H₂O
To prevent scaling, Smedic's RO Membrane Scale Inhibitors and Organophosphorus Inhibitors work through threshold inhibition, crystal distortion, and dispersion mechanisms. The chemical functional groups (such as phosphonates and carboxylates) coordinate with calcium and magnesium ions at sub-stoichiometric concentrations, distorting the developing crystal lattice structure of CaCO3 or CaSO4. Instead of forming hard, insulating scale layers, these minerals are kept in a highly dispersed, non-adherent suspension that is easily flushed out during system blowdown.
Similarly, foam control is a critical factor in both cooling tower basins and industrial wastewater lines. High levels of biological activity or organic contaminants in Nigerian river water generate extensive surface tension. Smedic’s Organic Silicone and Polyether Defoamers feature exceptionally low surface tension and low solubility in foaming media. They disperse rapidly across the gas-liquid interface, weakening the surfactant film surrounding the bubbles, causing immediate bubble collapse and preventing re-foaming.
